Why is soccer so popular around the world? Is it because it requires no special equipment and therefore anyone can play? It's quite baffling
Kicky ball, tight shirts
I used to play soccer a lot when I was a kid. Just a plastic ball and a couple of bricks to set up the goal and we'd play for hours. In terms of accessibility, yeah it's pretty easy to play it. It's also very entertaining. Since I enjoyed playing it, I was naturally drawn to watching football matches. [Yeah, You read it right! It's FOOTBALL not soccer!]
I think everyone else hit on it, it's extremely accessible - I saw dudes on a warehouse floor take some plastic wrap, roll it into a ball and there was an impromptu match
I think it's because it is very easy to get into/self explanatory, not to mention the massive community built around this, the world comes together during the world cup, few events seem to bring global "unity" as much as this sport does. The sport embodies the easy to learn, hard to master mentality many people are drawn to.
It’s been called “universally positive” and has always brought people together from around the world. It’s not about the equipment but the community it creates. There’s nothing baffling about that. Google it. It’s not that difficult to comprehend.
Thing is you only need a ball. And it can be played from 1 player onwards to any number enough space provided. And it combines artistic abilities, fight, speed, muscle, will, team and individual skills. So many find it appealing. But the pro leagues all have one problem: greed, doping, injuries and corruption. Not to mention that it is used as a nationalistic means, propagangda tool, war replacement or even as a casus belli in a few cases in southern america. Also it is used as a background ideology for people to organise violence and even political uproar. Same as in ancient roman Empires. The fighting sports mingle with politics and ideology.
