there is no one answer - context matters, your relationship with the person kind of defines that... also I feel like an at least equally important question is: where do the arms go ? - also a very context sensitive thing that depends on who you are hugging

Depends on the person and situation!!
If it’s someone you casually know and are friendly with, a few seconds
If it’s a loved one, as long as they wanna hug for lol
If it’s a stranger or someone you just met, maybe don’t hug them. Maybe that’s just me but I hate it when I meet someone for the first time and they say “I’m a hugger, hope that’s ok” bc it is always awkward for me ;w; I have to know someone pretty well before I’m ok hugging

I let whoever is hugging me decide that.
