This happened to me on Wednesday evening. It’s around 7pm and I’m in a hotel foyer walking from the concierge desk towards the lifts. A man walks in the revolving door just ahead of me and we both look right at each other and hold eye contact for about three seconds too long. “Hello!” I thought. There are three different banks of lifts in the hotel but he heads for the same one as me, still slightly ahead. He’s standing smiling at me as I get there and says “After you” when the doors open. I ask him which floor and then push 4 and 13. He’s carrying a brown paper bag with takeaway food in it - still smiling at each other. He kind of rustles the back and I say, “What have you got in there?” He says, “Vietnamese food,” looking a bit like it’s the first time he’s ever tried Vietnamese food. I say, “Ooh, fancy!” Then he says, “Have you eaten?” all smiley. And I say, “Yes, I had an early dinner at (the place next door) because I’m leaving any minute now.” The lift has arrived at the fourth floor and as I was getting out I said, “Enjoy your dinner,” kicking myself for not being on the top floor! And he was all tongue-tied and said “…enjoy your…journey.” The end. If I hadn’t had a train to catch, could it have been the start of something wonderful? Who knows. It was nice though.
What do you usally say back when someone says "thank you"?
Yes, when you’re in a tin tube 30,000 feet in the air at a temperature of around -32C you need some form of central heating. There’s a heating control dial in the food prep/service area where the crew hang out. They turn it up and down just like you’d do at home. They turn it up when they want the passengers to sleep after meal times etc.
