As a child I assumed it was meant to be thrown, I think. I hope I wasn't taught this, because it's pure bullshit.

Even throwing away the stems of broccoli or parsley isn't cool by me.

Toast it, perfect base for beans or spaghetti on toast. Sometimes just tear it up and put in compost bins or feed it to the birds.
